What immunizations should I consider for travelling to Tanzania?

We highly recommend a consultation with your personal physician or travel clinic prior to your journey to Tanzania. It is very important that you stay up-to-date with your vaccinations and take basic preventive measures to avoid possible health hazards on-side.

Below is a small overview of the immunizations recommended by the World Health Organization as well as further precautions to consider when travelling in Tanzania.

Immunization

Regardless of your destination, the World Health Organizations recommends for travelers:

  • diphtheria
  • hepatitis B
  • measles
  • mumps
  • polio
  • rubella
  • tetanus

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends for Tanzania:

  • hepatitis A
  • rabies
  • typhoid

A yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers arriving from, or having transited through, countries where yellow fever is endemic. Direct arrivals from non-endemic countries, including all countries in Europe and North America, are usually not required to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Malaria & Bug Bites

Malaria, a disease transmitted by mosquitos, is present throughout the country. It is therefore important that you talk to your doctor on how to prevent malaria while travelling and which anti-malarial drug suits you best.

You should try to avoid mosquito bites especially after sunset. Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shits and pants; and use an appropriate insect repellent. Most hotels and lodges will provide a mosquito net – if a mosquito net is not available, they will spray the room during dinner time.

Food, Water & Hygiene

Unclean food and water can cause diarrhea and other diseases. Always choose food that has been freshly cooked and is served hot. If you buy vegetables and fruits from the local market, make sure they are thoroughly washed in clean water, or are easy to peel without contaminating the inside.

Only drink water that you know is safe. All hotels, lodges and supermarkets provide drinking water – usually sealed with a plastic. It is also advised to use drinking water to brush your teeth. Tap water can be used for showering.

Medical Kit

It is advisable to travel with a small medical kit that includes basic medicines that you may need – like broad-spectrum antibiotic, anti-diarrhea medication, painkiller, etc. Also, include some first aid items like disinfectant and plasters. Your doctor can assist to put together a travel pharmacy kid.
