Detailed Itinerary:

Day 01: Arusha – Lake Manyara National Park – Rift Valley / Karatu

In the morning, meet & greet in Arusha with your professional guide. Drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Your guide will open the pop-up roof so you can directly observe the wildlife. The park stretches 50 km along the Rift Valley escarpment wall and Ernest Hemingway once described the views as “the most stunning” he had ever seen. Look forward to a striking landscape with the steep Rift Valley to the West and the endless Masai Steppe with its alkaline lake to the East. The park provides a home for buffaloes, elephants, giraffes and large baboon families – seasonally also for flamingos and pelicans. In the late afternoon drive up the Rift Valley and stop at the scenic viewpoint before proceeding to your accommodation.

Soon you will reach the short grass plains of Serengeti National Park with a first game drive taking place in the afternoon. Serengeti is well-known for its unique kopjes which appear suddenly within the grass plain. Visit the Maasai, Moru and Simba kopjes and look out for the leopards and lions that can usually be seen relaxing on top of them. Continue to your accommodation in Central Serengeti.

Day 03 – 05: Serengeti National Park

In the morning proceed further north and you will reach the legendary Mara River by the afternoon –with game drives enroute. Between July and October, thousands of wildebeests will gather at the Mara River waiting for the perfect time to cross. Of course, large Nile crocodiles already lie in wait as the wildebeests cross the river. And such predators as cheetahs, leopards and lions are ready to pounce as the migration crosses their territory. During the coming months, the wildebeest migration will spread to the northern grasslands, where green grazing grounds can be enjoyed, and cross back and forth between Serengeti and Masai Mara. What a spectacle!

Wake up early and proceed to the road that descends into Ngorongoro Crater! The crater was formed two million years ago during a volcanic eruption. Due to the permanent availability of fresh water, it supports a large variety of animals. The resident game varies from between 20.000 to 25.000 animals. With a bit of luck, you may come across the ‘Big Five’ – buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and the extremely endangered black rhino. Also watch out for elands, hippos, hyenas, warthogs, wildebeests and zebras. Bird-life is plentiful and includes seasonal flocks of flamingos at Lake Magadi. Proceed to Karatu to overnight.
