Pemba Island Holidays: 6-Day Sample Beach Extension
Pemba Island is known as the „Green Island“ due to its dense tropical vegetation and lush rainforest. It is also referred to as „Clove Island“ as it is the world’s main exporter of cloves. The island is surrounded by countless small, partly uninhabited offshore-islands which provide ideal conditions for diving, snorkeling and sunbathing. Pemba has so far been spared from the waves of mass tourism – this is partly because those travelers looking for relaxated beach stay should have an appropriate budget. Sounds like your ideal Pemba Island Holidays destination?

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Day - Welcome to Pemba Island
Arrival in Pemba Island by a light aircraft plane (usually a Cessna with 12-seats). After you have collected your luggage, you will be met by your transfer driver outside the terminal. Transfer to your beach resort (driving distance depending on your overnight choice between 15 minutes to 1 hour). Enjoy a welcome dinner and a relaxing evening at your beach resort.
Day 2 - 5: Relaxtion at the beach or Diving
Unwind and relax on the shores of Pemba Island. Pemba has various beaches and overnight options – each with their own personality. While planning, we will find the ideal spot to meet your needs! Depending on your location, you might option to explore the Indian Ocean on a snorkel or dive adventure off-the-shore; head out on a cultural excursion to lear more about the „Clove Island“; or simply relax and enjoy life on the beach.
The dive sites around Pemba Island are spectacular. The deep Pemba channel rises dramatically towards the island’s west coast with many incredible and healthy reefs plus an exceptional visibility. Due to the strong currents, most diving sides are however ideal for advanced divers only. However, there are also a few options for snorkelers and diving beginners.
If you need a day outside of the water, then venture out on an island excursion tour and visit in the far north-eastern tip of Pemba the ancient Ngezi rainforest. There are two nature trails through the forest. The Joshi Trail takes roughly 1-hour and is ideal for spotting various birds, red colobus monkeys and if you are lucky even the Pemba flying foxes – usually spotted in the early mornings and late afternoons. A longer option is the Taufiki Trail which heads north through the forest and ends at Vumawimbi Beach – depending on your fitness level a 3- to 4-hour walk. You can option to retrace your steps back through the forest, walk back through the villages bordering the reserve, or be picked-up proceeding to the Ngezi Lighthouse at Ras Kigomasha.
Your excursion to the Ngezi rainforest is best combined with a Spice Farm Visit. Did you know that Pemba Island is still the predominant global producer of cloves yielding around 70% of all the world’s cloves?
You should definitley add a Sunset Cruise in a traditional sailing vessel – called Ngalawa, to your holiday adventure! Leaving from the beach at around 5:00 pm, you will set sail and cruise along the shoreline over the reefs enjoying the sunset with a bottle of bubbly! If you are super lucky you might even spot dolphins or humpback whales on your sail trip!
Day 6: Departure Day - Flight to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar
Transfer to the airport for your light aircraft plane back to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar – depending on your international outbound flight.
